Memorial Day Poem

 

If Only Our Founding Fathers Could See

 

If only now our founding fathers could see

What’s happened in the “Land of the Free,”

The nation they founded and sacrificed for—

A people who tyranny did abhor.

 

At Griffin’s Wharf British tea enriched the sea

By protesting Sons of Liberty!

With the signing of the Declaration done

Together they’d all fight, or all be hung.

 

As the Revolutionary War began

Past the end of its seven year span—

All could see the guiding, Providential hand

Aiding, establishing this new free land.

 

And when in World War Two, the Nazi regime

Whet its despot sword in blood-red gleam,

We knew we must not stand and watch idly,

For Hitler was a foe to liberty.

 

But again in Korea and Vietnam,

When communistic power broke the calm,

We were not afraid to go and fight abroad,

When we saw a threat to our home and sod.

 

But today, selfish people indwell the land

Who love not freedom, nor claim her brand.

They understand not to what lengths she was sought,

Nor by the countless lives wherewith she was bought.

 

If personal safety ranks above everything

Then my friend, you deserve a ruling king,

For some day you’ll sadly come to realize,

A priceless, blood-bought gift you did despise.

 

 

If we want to remain the Land of the Free

One nation under God we must be!

It’s possible to be the “Home of the Brave”,

When you have no fear of eternal grave.

 

So teach our children the values we know and love

And of our Father in heav’n above,

May the heritage of our posterity

Be gratitude, faith, and prosperity.

I am very grateful to all who have sacrificed for the freedom I enjoy today. I hope I am not alone in the prayer that America will turn back to the God of her youth and once again be "One nation, under God."
