Out Of The Far Corners by Peter Iliyn
I actually discovered this book by looking at "suggested" books on Amazon. I had read most of the material on my parents' book shelves that interested me and wanted something new to read, so I went to Amazon and typed in the name of one of the books I had previously read and enjoyed and then scrolled through the suggestions to see if anything caught my eye. After looking this one over, reading reviews, and sending it to my mom to see what she thought--she was enthusiastic about it--I ordered a copy...and so did she ;)
It was written by Peter Iliyn about the life of his father, mother, aunts, and uncle. Most of us in America live relatively easy lives, but Vanya knew firsthand what trials and struggles in life feel like. Separated from his parents by their death when he was very young, his youngest sibling dies on their journey to Russia, relocated from "adopted" family to "adopted" family, separated from his siblings, beaten by his adopted mother, sick almost to the point of death, etc. Through all of these trials he never turns from his faith in God, who seems at times to be his only true friend.
In some ways, parts of the account remind me of the Bible account of Moses. In both cases their parents instilled in them knowledge of and faith in God at a very young age, and in both cases they stayed true to their beliefs. Both endured many hardships and both at some point felt alone (aside from God).
An amazing account that will challenge you to have greater faith in God and to be much more thankful for the many things that are taken for granted every day.
From the back cover of the book:
Vanya Iliyn's formative years were spent on the move, traveling the far
corners of the world Russia, Central China, and the Americas amid
seemingly impossible hardships. His journey crossed the landscape of his
heart as well. Orphaned and alone, Vanya could look only to God for
protection, guidance, and grace. His remarkable story, written in his
own words by his eldest son, Peter Iliyn, speaks to the power and
majesty of God.
